Almost 60 students attended the HOSA Indiana State Leadership Conference this past week. HOSA, which stands for Future Health Professionals, was formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America. They competed in several events, earned numerous awards – and had lots of fun during the process. Thirty-nine students placed in the top 10 of their respective categories.
Junior Madeline Yocum, who received second place in the category of Research Poster, explained how her event worked. For this event, Yocum had to pick a topic, research every part of it, create a display and be able to present to a judge. “I knew nothing about [my topic] prior, so I had to start from the bottom and then do all my research, format the poster and then write a speech for it,” she said.
HOSA has opened up a lot of opportunities for Yocum, including meeting new people and learning about many different things she would have never known about. “I’ve learned so much and I’ve expanded my knowledge,” she said. “It has helped me in a lot of my other school subjects.”
Yocum thinks that although HOSA is hard, it is an amazing experience. “It may sound intimidating, but it is super fun,” she said. She knows that putting in the hard work and time may not be something that everyone enjoys, but the payoff was great for her. “You have to work hard but it’s truly all with it in the end,” she said.
Overall, HOSA students earned medals in 17 different events, with 18 students qualifying for the international competition slated for July.
“The last few days have been incredible,” said HOSA Sponsor Elaine Townsend. “We won in events where students had to read, write, speak, show professionalism, create art, debate, calculate and problem solve. This is a PHS team effort.”
