Coding to... Kindness? You betcha! 2nd graders kicked off a month long unit on coding last week. They began by reading the story "Coding to Kindness" by Valeria Sousa and connecting friendship and coding by learning how each thing requires multiple steps/actions in order for it to be successful. Students then explored simple coding with Blue Bots. By the end of September, 2nd graders will have learned the basics of scratch coding using Scratch Jr. and the 2nd grade PLTW Computer Science module.

Literature circles are a great way that students are exposed to various different chapter books while also learning essential skills that go right along with the 21st century skills (what we like to refer to as the 4C's) of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Students in 5th grade recently read "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" by Christopher Paul Curtis and then created and performed skits for chapters of the book.

"Inside all of us is Fear. Inside all of us is Adventure. Inside all of us is… A Wild Thing!”
1st graders enjoyed practicing their oral fluency while reading "Where the Wild Things Are". Reading out loud is a great way younger students learn to practice and improve their reading expression, fluency, and comprehension!

Question: How much salt needs to be added to a glass of water before an egg will float?
Hypothesis: 7 teaspoons? 4? More? Less? You'll have to ask 4th graders who used the Scientific Method to complete this experiment last week!

How fun it is when the principal visits your classroom and you get the chance to teach her a new math/coding game!

Just a reminder: Plainfield Schools will be CLOSED on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 for a Teacher In-Service Day.
