Plainfield High School students recently participated in a hands-on learning experience designed to introduce them to the world of engineering and surveying. Having just completed a project designing homes for Habitat for Humanity, the students were ready to take on a bigger challenge: learning how a subdivision is created from concept to presentation.
To support the project, Banning Engineering provided guidance throughout the week, with Jon Polson, Chad Ziegler, and Jeff Healy participating in the instruction. Students were treated as “developers for the week,” working with a real property site and learning how survey data, municipal requirements, subdivision layout, and stormwater considerations all factor into the design process.
The week concluded with students presenting their final subdivision concepts in a mock Plan Commission setting, giving them a clearer understanding of the many roles and steps involved in bringing a development to life.
