Plainfield High School is proud to announce the hiring of Gavin Groninger as the new Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.
He will be succeeding coach Andy Weaver, who is stepping down from coaching. “We are excited to welcome Gavin back to Plainfield High School and begin working with our student-athletes.” said superintendent Andy Allen.
Coach Groninger brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a deep connection to Plainfield basketball. Most recently, he served as the head boys’ basketball coach at Mooresville High School for the past two seasons. In his first year leading the Pioneers, Groninger guided the program to a Sectional Championship—the school’s first in 27 years.
“I’m excited to come to lead the Plainfield High School Basketball Program. After winning a state championship at Plainfield in 1999 and serving eleven years as an assistant under Coach Weaver, I’m honored to be named the new head boys’ basketball coach at Plainfield High School. I’m ready to build on the foundation and continue the success of the Plainfield Boys Basketball program. Go Quakers!”
Before his time at Mooresville, Groninger was a familiar face in the Plainfield program, serving as the varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach beginning in 2013. His return marks a meaningful homecoming, as he looks to build on the program’s tradition of excellence.
An alumnus of Plainfield High School, Groninger was a standout player on the 1999 Boys 3A State Championship team. His individual achievements include being named a 1999 Indiana All-Star and earning 1999 First Team All-State honors. Coach Groninger was selected to the 2024 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team.
Groninger continued his basketball career at the University of Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines for four years and earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and Communications. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health from IUPUI.
Coach Groninger and his wife, Megan, are the proud parents of four children: Charlee (16), Henry (13), Indee (8), and Millee (4).
Plainfield High School looks forward to the future of its boys' basketball program under Coach Groninger’s leadership.
