August at The Lab


In September at The Lab, we are focusing on two new Habits of MInd: Managing Impulsivity and Persisting. Students get a chance to practice these as they work in one of seven groups for a 90-minute learning experience related to the theme "Waste Not, Want Not." Students investigate the ideas of reduce, reuse, recycle through age-appropriate, hands-on learning.

Process Place Activity Overview
Building Fab Lab/Storage Area Identify and safely use screwdrivers, hammers, and pliers. Create recycled straw bracelets.
Creating Collaboration Court Use a device (iPad or Chromebook) to create an animation or video about a recycling topic
Digitizing Emerging Technology Learn basic coding using BlueBots
HRH Wellbeing / Growing Thinking Studion A /Studio C or Learning Garden Learn about heart health by interacting with a display provided by Hendricks Regional Health. / Investigate worms or harvest and plant in the Learning Garden
Inventing Maker Space Build using a makerspace kit
Investigating Messy Space Create paint using natural materials
Connecting / HRH Wellbeing Collaboration Court/Thinking Studio A Learn about a career opportunity from a Guide to their Future / Learn about heart health by interacting with a display provided by Hendricks Regional Health.

In October at The Lab, we are focusing on two new Habits of Mind: Taking Responsible Risks and Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations. Students get a chance to practice these as they work in one of seven groups for a 90-minute learning experience related to the theme "The Space of Earth." Students investigate the really big and really small -- from the universe and planets down to cells and microorganisms -- through age-appropriate, hands-on learning. Many of the students will visit a digitarium on loan during their Odyssey to view stars, planets, and the place of the Earth in our universe.

Students get a chance to practice these as they work in one of seven groups for a 90-minute learning experience related to the theme "A Hero's Journey." Students will make connections with heroes in our real-world and learn about the science of superhero powers -- through age-appropriate, hands-on learning.
