And just like that, another school year ends

The last bell has rung, the last locker slammed, and the last footsteps have left all six Plainfield schools as students begin their summer break. Teachers will officially be back for half-a-day tomorrow, but in all reality, teachers will be in trainings and their classrooms much of the summer.

While elementary celebrations have been taking place for the last week, Van Buren sent their 5th grade students off in style, with their final awards program this afternoon followed by a graduation walk through the school. The gym was filled with parents, aunts and uncles and grandparents as teachers introduced their classes and shared awards. While the awards are special, it would be hard to beat the video that, for the first time this year, was created by the fifth grade students themselves.

The graduation walk is always a special time, when the Kindergarten through 4th grade students and all staff line the hallways to say goodbye one final time.

Just as the Van Buren graduation walk ended, students at PCMS were gathering the last of their things to head home for the summer as well. And like they've done for many years, the staff sent the buses off with waves and cheers for a safe and fun summer.

Teachers will finish their work tomorrow, and Friday morning will find the graduating seniors gathering for a Commencement rehearsal. Then on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m., the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance will be played in the PHS gymnasium.

The Administration Building will be open all summer, with hours of 7 to 3. The office will be closed from 11:30 - 12:30 for lunch. School hours will be the same, although there may not be someone in the school office every day.

For the first time, Plainfield Schools will have a student assistance counselor available to provide support to students throughout the summer. Those hours will also be Monday through Friday, 7-3. By calling 317-754-5550, students can access local resources, referrals to mental and social support agencies, or schedule an appointment. As always, though, call 911 in case of emergency.

We wish all of our Plainfield students and families a safe and JOY-filled summer break. We'll see many of you in the gyms during camps and workouts, while we'll see some at the other camps taking place in the buildings. Don't forget to keep reading, keep dreaming, and keep exploring! We'll be ready to welcome you back when school begins again on August 5th.
