The Plainfield Community School Corporation is proud to present Brentwood Elementary first grade teacher Natalie Boyer with the 2012 Teacher of the Year Award.

Boyer has been teaching for 30 years, all but three of which have been in her present position at Brentwood Elementary.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from DePauw University and received her Masters of Education and Reading Endorsement from Butler University.

Boyer is extremely committed to professional development and has been a mentor and trainer to various teachers throughout the years.  Her classroom practices are both positive and innovative as demonstrated through differentiated learning stations for literacy and math and outstanding student reading advancement.  Boyer is particularly fond of the Linda Mood Bell reading program.

Positive parent involvement is a key to student learning for Boyer.  She herself invests additional time in her students outside of the classroom by attending numerous activities such as basketball games, piano recitals, and church plays in an effort to be an encouragement in their external lives as well.  She sets an example by being very involved in the community.  She has been a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, chairperson of the Ginny Buehler Scholarship and Auction, Young Authors chairman, PPEA representative for Brentwood Elementary, Teacher Booth Chairman at PTO activities, and initiated a free reading clinic for struggling readers at Brentwood.

In addition to multiple nominations for the Plainfield Teacher of the Year Award (2000, 2006, 2009), Boyer has received the following awards in recognition of her outstanding teaching:  Partners in Education Outstanding Teacher (2010); Brentwood delegate to attend the Blue Ribbon Schools Celebration in Washington, DC (2010); Optimist Teacher of the Year (1999); Channel 8 winner of the “I Love To Read” Contest (1995); and WTHR Shining Teacher Award (1992).

Boyer’s nominations for this award all detailed examples of compassion, enthusiasm, patience, and dedication.  We congratulate her on a job well done!

Accolades:

“While it is wonderful to have a teacher who is enthusiastic about learning, motivating her students and providing innovative ways of learning, Mrs. Boyer consistently delivers one additional unmistakable trait…compassion.”

“We consider ourselves so very blessed to have had her for our son’s 1st grade teacher!”

“Even after all these years of teaching, she still shows the same enthusiasm as 1st year teachers….Natalie also seems to find the good in each child no matter how difficult they can be.”

“Natalie Boyer is one of the most effective teachers I know.  She can start in August with a nonreader and have that child reading by Christmas!”

“She’s a great resource for other teachers.  She has a wealth of teaching “gadgets” and books…she is very willing to share, and she always jumps in when someone needs help.”
