The PCMS Jr. Academic Super Bowl Interdisciplinary Team was the 2012 Division 1 State Champion.  The Interdisciplinary team is comprised of members from the math, science, social studies and English teams and field questions from all four subjects.  All five teams competed in their Area competitions on Saturday, April 28, at Clark-Pleasant Middle School.

The topic this year was Colonial America and each team had to answer 25 questions from their respective topics. The Interdisciplinary, Math, Science and Social Studies teams placed first in the Area competitions and the English team placed fourth.  On Monday, April 30, all of the scores in the state were compared and final results were posted.  The Interdisciplinary team placed first, the science and social studies teams placed second, the math team placed seventh and the English team placed 15th.

The Interdiciplinary Team was coached by Brad DeHoff, Carla Charles, Joey Singleton and Karen Gossmann.  Members of the team were Hayden Hobbs, Annie Planker, Natalie Brejcha, Sutton Felty and Ellen Doss.

Plainfield students Rachel Mang, Emilia Spann, and Kendall Harting were 1st place winners at the Plainfield Community Middle School science fair in February.  The sixth graders recently also participated in the Central Indiana Regional Science Fair at Marian College.

Rachel's science fair project focused on finding which liquid had the most Vitamin C.  Emilia and Kendall worked to find out if dogs have a dominant paw like humans have dominant hands.

Interactive Social Studies

Social studies has come alive on the PCMS sixth grade CoolCat team. Recently students set up their own stores to simulate a market economy. They compared a market economy to other types of economies around the world.  They are learning about GDP and are comparing GDPs of various countries.

Sixth grade students have also been busy applying their map skills. Every Monday, teams utilize their map and chart reading skills to compete in Man vs. Social Studies challenges. Many teams, including The Flying Saucers, have won several times.

Some social studies classes will also be Skyping with a sixth grade class in Ontario, Canada. The CoolCats will have the opportunity to ask questions about Canada's government, culture, economy, geography, and history. This is a great example of how Plainfield uses advances in technology to hugely impact our students’ learning.

Congratulations to Mrs. Mindy Slavens, PCMS choir teacher, and the Middle School Swing Choir on an outstanding rendition of Dear Edwina Jr., a celebration of friendship and family from the creators of Junie B. Jones, the Musical.  The PCMS group held three performances of the bright, cheery and fast-paced new show about Edwina and her pals who put on a show tackling the world’s biggest problems in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper way to set a table!
