Broadway comes to Plainfield!

Third grade students from Van Buren Elementary and Central Elementary have been busy!  Miss Charisse Angell, Music Teacher, gladly took on the enormous task of Cast and Music Director for the production of Seussical Jr. when the opportunity arose.

Learning about animals

Springtime has brought lessons on animals for kindergarteners at Central Elementary.  Students have visited the zoo and learned all about the different types of animals that live there. They have also been learning about different types of animals that live on farms.

All four kindergarten classes are participating in hatching baby chicks throughout the month of May. The students have about two dozen eggs currently growing inside an incubator. To support this study topic, Miss Carmichael’s and Miss Shanklin’s classes invited a guest speaker who explained how chicken eggs grow and hatch while answering many questions from the students.  Their students also had the opportunity to meet and pet real chickens! The speaker brought in two, fully-grown show chickens for the students to see along with two young chickens.

Chemistry is a Blast

DSCF5886

Captivated by the wonders of chemistry, Central Elementary 2nd and 3rd grade students watched in awe as Mr. Guy Hansen demonstrated chemical interactions through exciting, colorful, and sometimes loud experiments.

This is a FREE program that is offered to schools through Lilly.  It is a 45min-1 hour presentation of different chemical/science demonstrations put on by Lilly volunteers.

Students are exposed to basic science vocabulary, such as solid, liquid, gas as well as challenged to predict outcomes when chemicals are mixed or changed.

The program got students enthusiastic about science, exposed them to the scientific process, and undoubtedly sparked interest in budding scientists!

Amelia Bedelia Day

Two heads are better than one!  Last Friday, students in Mrs. Broughton and Miss Markowitz's class enjoyed Amelia Bedelia Day.  Students read about the fun character, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the week.  (Amelia Bedelia is a story book character who confuses directions and does everything in the literal way.)  Students also completed various activities to go along with the story.  On Friday, they participated in a fashion show.  Their outfits consisted of clever ideas Amelia Bedelia might actually confuse and do.  Some ideas were pig tails (in their hair), a rain bow (a bow tie with raindrops on it), shoe strings (shoes with several yarn strings), a top hat (a black hat with tops on it), a ball gown (a dress with balls all over it), a girl with butterflies in her stomach (butterflies on the girl's stomach), etc.  Mrs. Broughton and Miss Markowitz were impressed with the creativity and wit of their students.  It is a highlight in their classrooms every year.
