"Books on Board"- A Workshop for Elementary School Parents

The Indiana Partnerships Center provided a “Books on Board” workshop and invited all parents of students who attend each of the four Plainfield Elementary Schools.  Parents participated in hands-on demonstrations of activities and games for improving their child’s reading skills.  Free materials were made available to parents, including a Books On Board Guide.

Clarks Creek Teacher Nominated Thanks to 5th Grade Student

Congratulations to Clarks Creek 4th grade teacher Cindy McGary on being selected as the Dugan Chevrolet/ICON December Teacher of the Month!  Mrs. McGary was nominated by current 5th grader, Kiersten Marten, who was a student in Mrs. McGary’s class last year.  You can read her nomination letter by following this link:  ICON’s December Teacher of the Month.

Representatives from Dugan Chevrolet came to the school and presented Mrs. McGary with the keys to a silver 2012 Chevrolet Camaro while her students eagerly watched from the sidewalk.  She will get to drive the Camaro for one week while Dugan gives her personal vehicle a complete car detail.

“Mrs. McGary fosters a classroom environment that models creativity and respect for others,” says Clarks Creek principal Michael Underwood.  He believes that she treats all her students with dignity and respect at all times.  “She is certainly deserving of this honor.”  He thought it also noteworthy that the honor came from a student she had last year.

Congratulations to Mrs. McGary and to Clarks Creek on encouraging an environment for exceptional learning, creativity and success.

Kendra's Call for Komfort

Friday, December 16th, Clarks Creek Elementary enjoyed a pajama day to raise money for Kendra’s Call for Komfort. Students and staff raised $850.  When J.R. Dugan from Dugan Chevrolet visited the school the same day, he was touched by Kendra’s story and came back with a check to add an additional $200.  We raised a total of $1,050.

Kendra is a fifth grade student at Clarks Creek Elementary and was diagnosed earlier this year with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.  True to her loving and generous spirit, Kendra has established Kendra’s Call for Komfort.  This fund was established earlier this year by Kendra to support other children going through chemotherapy.  Comfortable clothing such as pajamas will be purchased and given to the children at Riley Hospital.  For more information on the organization, you can visit www.kendrascallforkomfort.org.

Clarks Creek Student Puts December Value Into Action

amberlee2

When Clarks Creek Elementary 5th grader Anna Steely wrote to Barnes and Noble on behalf of her friend and classmate, Amberlee Scott, the company took almost no time at all to respond in a big way.  Roberta Sears, Community Relations Manager at the Plainfield store, delivered the donated items on Tuesday, December 20th.

An avid reader herself, Anna had seen the simplicity of the Nook Simple Touch and saw the potential for someone like Amberlee.   Anna’s letter explained that 11-year-old Amberlee has cerebral palsy which makes it difficult for her to turn pages on her own.

Anna had reached out to two other companies in hopes of helping her friend find an easier method of reading.  She heard nothing back from the two companies.  But Barnes and Noble stepped up and made a huge difference in Amberlee’s life that will not soon be forgotten.  Thank you, Anna, for your persistence in putting kindness into action.
