Summer 2018: Week Five

Things have slowed down considerably in the PCSC-world, as many administrators grab a few days of vacation before moving into full-blown back-to-school prep on July 9th. But there are still great things to report!

The demolition work at Van Buren is transitioning to renovation work, which is always a good sign. The most noticeable work is in the front of the building, where the extended awning over the front entrance has come down, and the front office and library are now shells of their former selves.

This work is being done to improve the safety and security of the building by changing the layout of the office. Visitors will now have to go through what we call a "double buzz-in" system, much like what we have in the other schools. This means someone at the front desk will "buzz" visitors into the building, then they go through the process of showing ID and having a Visitors' Badge made. Then they are "buzzed" into the school itself - thus the term "double buzz-in."

\r\n

At the same time, the library, or media center as they're known today, is being remodeled to better reflect the way students and teachers use school libraries today. The space will feature bright colors, open spaces for small- and large-group activities, and plenty of space for cozying up with a great book.

The following photos are architectural renderings of what the new entrance will look like. We think it's wonderful!

In other parts of the building, hallways are being painted and eventually, new flooring will go in. For now, the fresh coats of paint already make a big difference!

Earlier today, Lawson & Co. Auctioneers held an auction of retired equipment from throughout the school corporation. Have you ever wondered what happens to old school equipment? We were able to auction off soccer goal frames, desks, tables, chairs of all shapes and sizes, tools, cafeteria equipment, cafeteria tables, overhead projectors, conference tables, microscopes a clothes dryer,  a golf cart, and a 2001 Crown Victoria. Plus a whole lot more!

In student-focused news, 2018 grad Kayla Benge entered today's final round of the Indiana Women's Amateur as the leader after shooting two under par following the first two rounds.

If you have a future Red Pride football player in your family, you still have time to sign up for camp! Check out all the details at this link: https://bit.ly/2tCYucY

Don't forget that summer lunch programs continue! The Quakers Lunch Truck serves every day, Monday through Friday, at both Gladden Farms and the Plainfield Library - EXCEPT for the Fourth of July. Also, the Summer Lunch Bunch serves lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Franklin Park.

If you are a resident of Guilford Township, your June 2018 PCSC newsletter should be arriving next week. We hope you'll read it for even more news about the great things going on in our schools, as well as some exciting plans for the future!

\r\n

Finally, details are being finalized, but we will be distributing backpacks filled with school supplies on Friday, July 27th.  Locations and times will be shared as we get closer, but we wanted to be sure you get the date on your calendars. The supplies are for any PCSC student, thanks to the generous donations of Spreetail, a distribution business with a location right here in Plainfield. Their employees work hard to make this possible, and their generosity is greatly appreciated!

There's probably more great stories to share, but this has become a long update!  Wishing you all a safe (and not too hot) Independence Day holiday. We'll be back with our next update on July 13th.
