PHS principals get behind the grill for a fun twist on lunch duty

It's known as Senior Hot Dog Day. And yes, there's a Junior, Sophomore and Freshman Hot Dog Day.

Principal Mr. Siefert, Assistant Principals Mr. Schwanekamp and Mr. Menser, and Athletic Director Mr. Rodkey secretly love these days. They get to spend a couple hours outside, working the grill, playing some tunes, and serving their students.

The light-hearted atmosphere isn't just about the food, it's also about knowing one another without a textbook or an assignment or a ballgame being involved.

The administrative team at Plainfield High School knows their students pretty well, and they are very intentional about that.  Incoming freshmen are challenged to record a short video introducing themselves to Mr. Siefert, sharing what they enjoy or don't, what their dreams or goals might be.

PHS principals can be found in the stands at the many after-school competitions and events. Principals are in the hallways during every passing period, and they work the cafeteria at lunchtime. They know the students, most of them by name, some by their part time job or their extracurricular activities.

And on Hot Dog Day, with an occasional "Just one cookie," they enjoy the chance to mix it up a little bit. Whether they work the grills (Siefert and Rodkey), or bun the dogs (Menser and Schwanekamp), it's a well-organized process, with some good-natured fun for everyone. Unless, that is, you're not a fan of hot dogs.
