PHS increases awareness via National Disability Month

The Life Skills Class at PHS is about to wrap up a spirit week that has been both fun and educational. To recognize National Disability Awareness Month, the class and its teachers organized a spirit week, where students and teachers dress in a certain way each day. In this case, the days were designated by disabilities, with each represented by its color.

Monday was burgundy, representing National Disability Awareness Month

Tuesday was teal, for Anxiety Disorder Awareness

Wednesday was blue and yellow, for Down Syndrome Awareness

Thursday was rainbow for Autism Awareness

Friday will be green for Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, and Muscular Dystrophy Awareness

During each lunch period, peer mentors introduced students from the Life Skills class who then talked a bit about the disability(-ies) being featured that day.

Jessica Breidinger, Life Skills teacher at PHS, had this to say about the week's activities: "The student body has been amazing in listening to the students and peers, and many teachers and students are wearing the disability of the day spirit colors."

What a simple, yet meaningful way to increase awareness of challenges faced by people all around us. Great job to the peer mentors and students who have stood in front of a crowded lunch room, and to all who participated throughout the week!
